District committee scraps proposed sewer project in Bracebridge

A proposed sewer project in Bracebridge that has met a lot of resistance from residents has been scrapped.

On Wednesday morning the District of Muskoka Engineering and Public Works Committee met to discuss the Westvale and McCrank Drive area sewer project.

A majority of committee members felt there was a need to step back and review all of these projects that are proposed across the region, affecting over 1,600 homes.

Some members felt the district should be reaching out to provincial and federal governments to find assistance in funding these expensive projects, rather than expecting residents to front the bill.

Bracebridge Councillor Lori-Lynn Giaschi-Pacini was at the meeting to present her feelings on the matter.

She says to expect residents to take on these costs is asking too much.

In the end, committee members defeated the resolution to defer the project to 2017.

Members put forward a resolution to scrap the project entirely and work with district staff to review potential financing for these infrastructure projects in the future.

District council will have the final say on this matter during the next meeting on March 21st.
