One Billion Rising Muskoka seeks an end to violence against women

The Muskoka campus of Nipissing University will be raising awareness on violence against women this weekend.
The Muskoka campaign of One Billion Rising kicks off on Saturday, which is based on the statistic that one in three women will be assaulted in their life.
Muskoka Area Coordinator with Muskoka Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services Laurie Lamont says the event at Nipissing was created following a tragedy.
Lamont says students and staff were left unsure of how to deal with the trauma following the death of Wilson.
This led to their partnership with Muskoka Parry Sound Sexual Assault Services to host the Muskoka version of the worldwide event.
To start off the campaign on Thursday, Dawn Novak spoke to students about the events surrounding the death of her daughter.
Natalie Novak was murdered by her boyfriend in 2006, while she was attending Ryerson University.
Natalie grew up in Muskoka and was a dancer with the Bracebridge School of Ballet.
Shannon Morrison with the Bracebridge School of Ballet says they will be performing the dance Break the Chain and inviting others to join in.
The event will also feature musical performances from artists Tobin Spring, Gina Horswood and Cassandra Cutting.
One Billion Rising Muskoka runs on Saturday at the campus starting at 4:30pm and everyone is invited to attend.
