Flood watch extended for Muskoka and Parry Sound

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) says up to 50 mm of rain could be on its way and it “could cause significant impacts to water levels and flows on the watersheds.”

The MNRF says the District of Muskoka, Parry Sound District, and the City of Kawartha Lakes have received close to 150 mm of precipitation in April, almost double the historical monthly average.

While the water levels within the Black, Burnt, Gull, Severn, and Magnetawan Watersheds are within their normal ranges for spring, the forecasted rain could cause them to flood.

A flood watch has been in place for the Muskoka River and Severn River Watersheds since last week. It has been expanded to include all of the District of Muskoka, Parry Sound District, and the City of Kawartha Lakes.

The updated flood watch will be in place until May 3.

With that in mind, the MNRF says residents in lower-lying portions of flood-prone areas should prepare and keep a close eye on children and pets. Also, they advise forest access roads may be washed out.
