Hammer Bay property owner ordered to clean up oil spill

A Seguin Township property owner is working on cleaning up an oil spill.

Ministry of Environment and Climate Change officials say they were contacted on April 3rd after a local business spotted the spill along Hammer Bay on Lake Joseph. The property owner has hired an environmental cleaning service and the operation is being overseen by the MOECC. Ministry officials have not decided if the matter needs to be investigated further or if charges will be laid.

Residents in the area are asked to watch for oil sheen on the water. If you spot it and you use lake water, you should contact the health unit at 1-800-563-2808 or the ministry at 1-800-268-6060. Officials say lakeside property owners should not drink the water if oil is spotted.
