Bracebridge’s Collin Cameron continues to grow trophy cabinet

Collin Cameron won a pair of medals at the Para Nordic World Cup Finals in Prince George, B.C. over the weekend.

A sinus injury may have sidelined him for months before the competition, but you never would have known he was hurting unless he told you. The Bracebridge native took part in three events during the competition with his biggest triumph being when he won the gold medal in the sit-ski cross-country sprint race on Saturday.

“I never thought about gold, my main concern was to start the day off well in qualification,” said Cameron after the race. “I love sprinting, it’s the most fun event. [The event] was about coming out and being in synch where my body is at.”

He had to win two races earlier in the day to make it to the finals. Each race was one lap around a nearly 1 km course.

Cameron also took home a silver medal in the 20 km mass start classic on Sunday. The eight-lap race saw him duel with 14 other competitors along a nearly 2.5 km course.

He finished in just over one hour and two minutes which was about a minute slower than first-place Giuseppe Romele of Italy.

The first race of the World Cup for Cameron was on Wednesday and saw him place fourth in the five-lap, 10-kilometre biathlon.

Ahead of the competition, Cameron told the MyMuskokaNow.com newsroom, that he had to pull out of the Para Biathlon World Championships because of the sinus injury.

Both events were held in Prince George with the World Championships held during the first week of March and the World Cup kicking off the week after.
