The local health unit is reminding residents that falls are both dangerous and preventable.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) says falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in our region, accounting for 9,400 emergency department visits, 2,000 hospitalizations, and 100 deaths in 2020.
The health unit says falls can be life-altering for older adults, and residents should try to improve as many risk factors as possible, both at work and at home.
Some recommendations include keeping places well-lit, in good repair, and free of hazards such as clutter or ice. Officials add to make sure walking surfaces are non-slip, and any rugs are secured to the ground, as well as install railings to risk areas such as stairs.
