Gravenhurst Fire Department puts fire safety messaging on ice

The Gravenhurst Fire Department is continuing to do whatever it can to promote fire safety.

The latest initiative sees them partner with Gravenhurst’s Parks and Recreation Department to wrap an ice resurfacer for the Gravenhurst Centennial Centre. Kevin McKelvey, Fire Prevention Officer, says both sides feature the simple but important message that “smoke alarms save lives.”

The ice resurfacer is decorated to look like one of the fire department’s trucks. It features Sparky the Fire Dog hanging out the passenger window waving with the fire department’s logo plastered on both sides. “We kept the message simple,” says McKelvey

“We’re trying to promote fire safety within our town and community any way we can,” says McKelvey. He points out that the arena is the place where so many in the community spend time, so it’s the perfect place to spread the message. “We take every opportunity that we can to promote fire safety,” he continues.

According to McKelvey, the inspiration came from the Central York Fire Services who also wrapped an ice resurfacer with fire safety messaging around this time last year.

McKelvey says the ice resurfacer will stay for, hopefully, many years.

In April, a trailer was donated by Gravenhurst Canadian Tire, which McKelvey said allows them to spread their message throughout the town. The trailer has a sign on each side that can display messages.

McKelvey says the trailer has been well used since it was introduced, adding they intend to drag it behind one of the department’s trucks during the Nov. 26 Santa Claus Parade.
