Ice users of Georgian Bay and the Great Lakes need to be aware of ice breaker tracks. The Coast Guard and Ontario Provincial Police are warning ice users that recent snow falls may cover ice breaking tracks and changes in weather contribute to unsafe ice conditions that may remain long after the ships have left the area. Broken and fragmented icy tracks left behind by icebreaking operations and other ship traffic may not freeze over immediately. Icebreaking operations are currently underway in various areas of the Great Lakes including in the Midland and Owen Sound area to assist the shipping routes of the M/V Frontenac and the M/V Algorail. Yesterday, officers watched a snowmobiler fall into open water near Pentanguishine Bay, needing the help of a private boat to get out. The sledder took off before emergency crews could get to the scene and police are investigating to find out who it was.
