The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reminding residents to take steps to protect themselves as the region experiences its first air quality alert of the year.
According to the health unit, breathing wildfire smoke can affect everyone’s health, even at low levels, as it contains harmful air pollutants, including fine particulate matter like PM2.5 and gases.
Additionally, health officials said hot weather can contribute to increased air pollution levels, as pollution often rises during periods of extreme heat, which can also lead to serious health risks.
With both a heat warning and an air quality warning currently in effect, health officials are advising residents to limit the amount of time they spend outdoors and avoid strenuous activities.
The health unit advises those who need to be outdoors to consider wearing a well-fitted respirator, such as an N95 or equivalent, to reduce exposure to wildfire smoke.
Officials said those at greater risk of health effects include infants and young children, older adults, pregnant people, and individuals with chronic health conditions.
