Air Quality Warning upgraded for Muskoka

The air quality warning for Muskoka has been upgraded from yellow to orange as wildfire smoke continues to affect the region.

According to Environment Canada, smoke from wildfires burning in northwestern Ontario is causing very poor air quality and reduced visibility. While conditions may improve for some areas later this afternoon or evening, forecasters warn conditions could deteriorate again late Friday or Saturday.

Officials say heavy smoke conditions can put everyone’s health at risk, regardless of age or health status, and are urging residents to take precautions. They say most people may experience mild symptoms such as irritated eyes, nose and throat, headaches, or a mild cough. More serious symptoms include wheezing, chest pain, and a severe cough, and anyone experiencing a medical emergency should seek medical attention immediately.

Residents are being advised to avoid time outdoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible, and check in on those who may be more vulnerable.
