The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has issued a swimming advisory for Hanna Park Beach in Muskoka Lakes.
According to officials, the most recent water testing conducted on June 23 showed increased bacteria levels above 200 E. coli per 100 mL, resulting in an advisory being posted.
Officials said conditions that could have caused increased bacteria levels in the water include recent heavy rainfall, wind and high waves, large numbers of birds or swimmers, and cloudy water.
With increased bacteria levels, officials said there is a higher risk of skin, eye, ear, nose, or throat infections, as well as stomach illness.
Township of Muskoka Lakes officials have posted a sign at the Hanna Park Beach to inform visitors about the water conditions.
Residents are advised to avoid swimming until bacteria levels return to safe levels, and a notice has been posted at the beach. Those who choose to swim are advised to avoid putting their head under water or swallowing water.
Currently, Hanna Park Beach is the only beach in Muskoka Lakes under a Swimming Advisory.
Swimming advisories are also in place for Bass Lake Park and Franklin Park in Gravenhurst.
