Community Living Huntsville has opened registrations for its first-ever Muskoka’s Got Talent event taking place in February.
Jennifer Jerrett, event organizer and community engagement specialist for Community Living Huntsville, said they decided to rebrand the event to make sure that the name itself was inclusive of the whole region.
“We had a number of people who registered in previous years from Gravenhurst or Bracebridge, and there was a question whether or not they should be in Huntsville’s Got Talent, being from those areas,” said Jerrett.
She said the event is a fundraiser designed to help the organization support housing and affordable housing initiatives, ensuring that people with developmental disabilities “have a roof over their head.”
“People who are on a wait list for affordable housing through the district are waiting anywhere from four to ten years for affordable housing through the district. We know that people with disabilities wait ten times longer than that,” said Jerrett.
She said they acknowledged the current affordable housing crisis, adding they have people who are couch surfing and “on the brink of homelessness,” needing immediate action.
According to Jerrett, the event brings new components this year.
She said there is a “secret judge in the audience” whose role is to offer an audience perspective, complementing the four judges already seated on stage.
Jerrett said that another new component will be audience voting, adding people will see a QR code on the screen, allowing them to vote for the third person to advance to the top three.
