The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department is reminding residents to inspect their chimneys after a late-night fire on Penfold Lake Road early on Nov. 1.
According to officials, just after midnight on Saturday, fire crews were called to reports of a chimney fire. When firefighters arrived, flames were visible from the side and attic area of the home.
They say crews from Station One (Huntsville), Station Three (Hillside), and Station Five (Port Sydney) responded, bringing 20 firefighters and eight apparatus to the scene.
Firefighters launched an interior attack to stop the flames from spreading through the roof and attic, successfully saving the main living area.
Officials say the homeowner’s quick action made a big difference. She noticed charring on an interior wall and called 911 immediately.
An investigation determined the cause of the fire was a rodent nest that ignited from the heat of the chimney.
“As the colder weather settles in, it’s important for residents to have their chimneys inspected and cleaned before using wood-burning appliances,” said Steve Markham, Fire Prevention Officer. “Also, use caution when disposing of ashes – always place them in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid, stored outside and away from any buildings or combustibles.”
Fire officials said no injuries were reported.
The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department is urging residents to book annual chimney maintenance and practice safe ash disposal to help prevent fires this winter.
