Muskoka fire danger rating set to low ahead of long weekend

The Fire Danger Rating, provided by the Muskoka Association of Fire Chiefs, is currently set to low across Muskoka.

According to Steve Markham, Fire Prevention Officer for Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department, the rating was updated on May 13 and is not expected to change over the Victoria Day weekend.

“At this time, the forecast does not indicate any significant weather changes that would be expected to impact the current rating heading into the long weekend,” Markham said.

Despite the low rating, residents are still being reminded to follow local outdoor burning regulations. Markham said that daytime burning is not permitted between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and all outdoor burning must comply with municipal by-laws.

The Muskoka Association of Fire Chiefs says that warmer weather can have a significant impact on the severity and duration of wildfires, and fire danger ratings change regularly throughout the summer season. Residents are reminded to stay informed of the current rating and take precautions to reduce the risk of starting a fire.
