Fire danger rating set to moderate across Muskoka

The fire danger rating across Muskoka has been lowered from high to moderate.

That is according to Muskoka Association of Fire Chiefs officials who made the announcement on July 23.

According to officials, under the current rating, small recreational open-air fires are permitted between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m., while daytime burning is not allowed.

Officials said residents planning to have an open-air fire should follow fire safety practices, including keeping fires at least six metres away from properties, structures, trees, and other flammable materials, while limiting fires to a maximum width of 61 centimetres.

Association officials also advised residents to never leave fires unattended, avoid using accelerants such as gasoline, burn only dry wood, keep water and tools nearby for emergencies, ensure fires are completely extinguished before leaving, maintain a safe distance from flames, and call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Residents are advised to check their local by-law department for outdoor burning regulations in their municipality. In the event of a fire, residents are being reminded to call 911 immediately.
