Quick action and solid preparation by staff prevented a fire at Muskoka Traditions Retirement Home.
According to the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department, firefighters responded to reports of a fire around 11 a.m. on March 3. Officials say when firefighters arrived, staff had already put out the fire using a portable fire extinguisher.
The department says the fire started in a recessed wall heater located in a stairwell, and staff quickly noticed the problem and put the fire out before it could spread, limiting the fire to the heater area with no need for an evacuation.
Officials say it’s a great example of how preparation work makes a difference, as the department provided hands-on training to staff at Muskoka Traditions in November.
“This is exactly why we focus on education, prevention and training,” said Steve Markham, Public Education and Fire Prevention Officer with the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department. “When people understand the risks and feel confident using the right equipment, they can stop a small fire from becoming a much more serious emergency. The staff did an outstanding job.”
The department is commending staff for their calm and confident response and their commitment to resident safety.
