Gravenhurst Fire Department touts safety tips following electronic device fire

The Gravenhurst Fire Department is reminding residents of fire safety tips following an electronic device fire at a short-term rental on Aug. 15.

According to fire crews, the renter assumed the device was safe to use because they found it in the unit. However, the device ended up causing a fire, resulting in one person suffering a hand injury.

As a result, the fire department is reminding people to keep several safety considerations in mind when using battery-powered devices.

Officials recommend always using manufacturer-approved charging cords and placing devices on a hard, non-flammable surface while charging, rather than on a bed, couch or near combustible materials.

Officials also said travellers should confirm that their accommodations have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Additionally, fire crews said people should identify all exits, plan two ways out of every room, and check electronic devices and charging equipment for potential hazards.

“Don’t rely on others for your safety, do what you can to protect yourself and your family,” said fire prevention officer Kyle Steele.
