One dead following house fire in Dwight

A fatal house fire in Dwight is under investigation following a response by Lake of Bays Fire Rescue yesterday evening (May 19).

According to officials, emergency crews were called to a structure fire on Spring Lake Road at approximately 7:46 p.m. Roughly 20 firefighters from Station 30 in Hillside and Station 20 in Port Cunnington arrived on scene shortly before 8 p.m., where they encountered heavy black smoke coming from the home.

Fire officials said upon arrival, crews conducted a rapid assessment of the structure. They ventilated the building to clear smoke and carried out overhaul operations to ensure there were no remaining hotspots.

One person was transported to hospital for treatment related to smoke inhalation. Fire officials confirmed that another occupant was found dead inside the home.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in and is investigating alongside Lake of Bays Fire Rescue and partner agencies to determine the cause and origin of the fire.

“We extend our sincere condolences to the family and loved ones affected,” said Jeremy Alldred-Hughes, Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Services. “This is a very difficult loss for our community and for our responding crews.”
