Bracebridge firefighters are encouraging residents to test their smoke alarms as part of the annual “Test Your Smoke Alarm Day” on Sept. 28.
The day is part of a province-wide campaign launched in response to the 133 fire fatalities that occurred in Ontario in 2022, the highest number in 20 years.
“Test Your Smoke Alarm Day was launched to encourage all Ontarians to learn more about smoke alarms, fire safety, and home fire escape planning, all of which can save lives,” said officials.
According to officers, smoke alarms have been legally required on every storey of a residence in Ontario since 2006. This includes vacation homes, cabins, trailers, RVs, and cottages.
Officers said landlords are required to test smoke alarms annually, after replacing the battery, and after every change in tenancy. Renters must notify their landlord as soon as they become aware that a smoke alarm is not operating.
