Special camps promoting leadership and fitness for girls will take place in Muskoka this summer.
YWCA Muskoka is running six weeks of summer day camp programs for girls ranging in age from eight to 16.
The camps will take place in Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and Huntsville. The YWCA will continue its partnership with YMCA Gravenhurst to run the Healthy Mind, Healthy Body day program from August 12th-16th. This program is for girls age eight to 12 and registration can be done through the YMCA Gravenhurst.
It is a program that youth coordinator Stacey Schat is happy to bring back.
”YWCA Muskoka was very pleased to have partnered with the YMCA in Gravenhurst for the Healthy Mind, Healthy Body day camp last summer,” she says. “Due to its success we are delighted to be offering the camp again this year.”
The Girlz Unplugged (ages eight to 11) and Girlspace Leadership (12-16) have a theme of ‘Creating Your Compass’. It will help focus on obstacles that youth face and some of the ways they can be overcome.
“It takes a lot of courage for our young women to go out into the world, facing their peers and fears while all sorts of changes are going on for them in this crazy world,” explains course facilitator Marcy Hill. “Sometimes it feels very much like being lost in the woods. So let’s help them create some tools and some safety measures so that they can feel empowered and confident.”
Along with themed programming, Girlspace also offers participants additional training and an opportunity to be a volunteer peer mentor for a day in the Girlz Unplugged Summer programs. Girlspace weeklong programs will be in Huntsville, July 15 to 19 and in Bracebridge, July 22 to 26.
Girlz Unplugged Summer and Girlspace Leadership run daily from 9 to 4 pm with extended hours for drop off and pick up. Healthy snacks are included and subsidies are available. To learn more details or to register, visit online by clicking here.
