Today Muskoka is mourning the loss of one of its most endearing citizens and a legend in the construction and development world.
81-year-old Bruce Evans passed away yesterday at the Algonquin Grace Ward at Hospice Huntsville after a lengthy 10+ year battle with prostate cancer.
Evans was former owner of Evanco Ltd and his accomplishments dot the Muskoka landscape.
Evans’ daughter Cheryl Cooper says a lot of Muskoka residents knew him as a huge community booster….
Cooper adds that he had Muskoka on his mind right up until the end….
Evans leaves behind his wife Marie, whom he had just celebrated a 60th anniversary with, as well as five children, daughter Linda, son Gregg, daughter Cheryl (Randy), son Richard (Jennifer) and daughter Tanya (Gerrard). He is also the beloved brother of Jean MacDuff and Gordon Evans (Laureen). His eldest brother Bob passed away a few years ago. His grandchildren include Sam, Christina, Robert, Jordan, Ben, Hayley, Evan, Brodie, Ryan, Rachel, Rebecca, Jake and Thomas. He also left behind three Great Grandchildren, Ivan, Eli and Lynlee.
Close to his death, Evans told Cooper that he “had just wanted to do things’ and he did, with his reach impacting Muskoka, Canada and into the US. Beyond being owner of the former Evanco Ltd., his accomplishments included owning Bruce S. Evans Ltd, which was based in Toronto. As a landscape contractor, he was responsible for doing a lot of the landscaping at Ontario Place, Canada’s Wonderland and Expo 67 in Montreal. He also was involved in a company called Forrec (For Recreation). In that company he took on a lot of landscaping construction at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. In the mid-70’s he also bought Fowler Construction. As a developer he was responsible for Grandview Resort , Roger’s Cove and the Muskoka Wharf, plus numerous golf courses – he built the majority of them here in Muskoka and many throughout Canada.
The family hopes to have a celebration of life at the Algonquin Theatre in Huntsville. There will be visitation times at Reynold’s Funeral Home in Bracebridge next week as well, but no exact times or dates have been set.
