Gravenhurst fire officials are trying to help create a ‘FireSmart’ community this spring.
Fire Chief Larry Brassard says due to low snowfalls, the spring weather is drying up the region quickly.
Brassard says there are many ways to avoid starting a fire that may quickly burn out of control, or having your home become part of the destruction in a forest fire.
This includes clearing up all dead brush around your home to create a safety perimeter and dropping off brush at landfills rather than burning it.
He also suggests cleaning out eavestroughs, keeping firewood away from the home and propane tank and consider removing dead trees from the property.
Brassard says the long-range forecast is showing more dry weather ahead, which could elevate the risk of forest fires significantly.
