River Street in Muskoka Lakes closed for construction as of June 17

A portion of River Street in Muskoka Lakes will be closed for construction and rehabilitation work on the Burgess Dam as of June 17.

According to Township of Muskoka Lakes officials, the closure will extend from Mill Street approximately 50 metres west.

Officials said the project is expected to be completed by fall or winter. A signed detour route will be in place until then, and access to River Street will remain available via Maple Avenue.

Township staff said the scope of the project includes raising the dam wall and installing a permanent spillway to redirect overflow during periods of high water. It also involves reconstructing the current retaining wall downstream of the dam and completing roadway improvements in the surrounding area to ensure long-term stability and support.

Residents are advised to drive with caution and follow all posted signage in the area.
