The Town of Huntsville is continuing to address the local healthcare workforce shortage, as two more physicians have signed five-year commitments to practice in the region.
The two physicians were recruited through the physician incentive program, which launched in the spring of 2024. With these latest additions, the total number of physicians secured has reached eight, bringing the town closer to its goal of ten.
According to municipal officials, discussions with additional candidates are ongoing.
Town and District Councillor Bob Stone said the milestone is exciting news for residents who have been without a primary care provider.
“We have been working very hard to attract physicians to our community, and this achievement means many residents will have access to the healthcare they need and deserve,” Stone said.
As part of the recruitment effort, the two physicians will open new practices in the area. According to officials, this is expected to help at least 500 people currently on waiting lists through the Algonquin Family Health Team or Health Care Connect to get assigned to a doctor.
Councillor Scott Morrison extended his gratitude to the community for helping make the recruitment initiative a success.
“What started as an idea has turned into a program that has exceeded anything we could have imagined,” Morrison said. “From financial contributions to in-kind donations like one-year car lease, golf and ski memberships, retail and service discounts, and restaurant vouchers, our partners have helped create an offer that truly stands out and is bringing new doctors to our town.”
The Town also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Algonquin Family Health Team, Lakeview Family Health Organization, and the Muskoka Almaguin Ontario Health Team in attracting and retaining physicians in the region.
