Huntsville Rotarians to host community event on dementia and home care

A group of local Rotary clubs is working together to bring the crucial conversation of dementia and home care to the community.

The Rotary Club of Huntsville, Rotary People of Action Huntsville, and the Rotary Club of North Muskoka will host “Dementia Can’t Wait: A Community Conversation on Dementia Home Care” on Sept. 17 at Trinity United Church in Huntsville.

The evening will begin with a screening of the documentary No More Silent Battles, followed by a panel discussion featuring experts in dementia care and advocacy.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the film scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

According to organizers, the documentary follows the personal journeys of four families as they navigate the challenges of the home care system, while also exploring the possibilities for positive change.

“Dementia doesn’t affect only the person who receives the diagnosis. It affects spouses, children, grandchildren, caregivers and entire families,” said Gord Mitchell, one of the event organizers. “As Rotary Clubs, we believe in bringing people together to identify important issues in our community and create opportunities for meaningful conversation. This event is about raising awareness, giving families a voice and helping our community better understand the realities of dementia home care.”

Following the screening, the expert panel will explore the realities of dementia care, the challenges families and caregivers face, and the importance of appropriate and compassionate support.

Organizers say the event is intended to provide an opportunity for residents to ask questions, share their own experiences, and consider how the Huntsville community can better support people living with dementia and their families.

Admission is free but due to limited space, advanced registration is required.
