The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) is urging families of students in grades three and four to update their immunization records by Feb. 3 to avoid suspension.
Health officials said families who received notices in June and November have now been issued suspension orders effective Feb. 3, unless updated immunization information is submitted to the health unit before that date.
“Immunizations protect children by helping their bodies build immunity before they encounter disease,” said Dr. Colin Lee, associate medical officer of health at SMDHU. “The recent measles outbreaks we’ve seen in Ontario show how quickly vaccine-preventable diseases can spread. Keeping immunization records up to date safeguards both our schools and the wider community.”
According to the health unit, 3,741 grade three and four students across Simcoe Muskoka still have missing or incomplete immunization records.
Health officials are advising parents and guardians to review their child’s immunization record, ensure they receive any missing vaccines and report the updated immunization information to the health unit.
For more information or to submit updated immunization records, families can use the CANImmunize phone app or the ICON desktop portal.
