Huntsville Mayor Scott Aitchison makes his first public appearance since having heart surgery

Supporting local healthcare has never been so personal for Scott Aitchison. Huntsville’s Mayor made his first public appearance since undergoing sextuple bypass surgery a month ago at Thursday night’s Mayor’s Golf Tournament dinner. He says he is feeling good and is well ahead of the standard pace of recovery. He also notes he’ll be starting to ramp up duties on Monday.

Aitchison calls his health scare a whirlwind; from calling his doctor about chest pains, to getting in to see a specialist and then having bypass surgery. He says he will never be able to thank his doctor enough, and he was able to see a specialist within a week. Aitchison says it’s important to get the message out to see your doctor if something feels wrong.

The money raised from this year’s golf tournament is going into a number of different healthcare facilities in Huntsville, including the Huntsville Hospital Foundation. Aitchison says community support is what ensures the hospital has the equipment it needs.

The proceeds will also be split up between the Fairvern Nursing Home, Christine’s Place and the Muskoka Women’s Advocacy Group. Aitchison says we are lucky to have health facilities like these in Huntsville, but we have to fight to keep them.

Muskoka healthcare officials have been trying to decide between renovating the two existing hospital sites and building a new facility since 2015. Aitchison says his position on keeping the two sites separate hasn’t changed.

There’s no word on exactly how much the tournament has raised yet, however Aitchison says it’s over $60,000.
