Heavy snowfall creating havoc with Huntsville’s snow clearing budget

All of the snow this winter is taking a toll on Huntsville’s snow clearing budget. Mayor Scott Aitchison says the town normally budgets around $1 million, but this year they could be adding another $250,000 to the cost.

Aitchison says that’s because the town has seen more snow so far this year than the previous two combined.

He says between November 15, 2014 and February 13, 2015, the town had 28.5 cm of snow. During that same time period last winter, the town had 71.1 cm of snow. And so far this winter, almost 170 cm of snow has fallen.

Aitchison says the overtime hours are building up and more sand is needed as the town’s stockpile is gone. But, he says they do have a plan going forward to widen rural roads and in-town roads, as well as getting rid of some of the snow banks at the end of driveways.
