Parks Canada is shedding more light on the issue with the Hamlet Bridge. Chief Engineer for Parks Canada’s Waterways Delivery Team, Dean Hamilton, says because the bridge is so old there has been some corrosion over the years. There are two portions of the bridge; the fixed part which was built in 1905, and the swing part which was built in 1922.
Hamilton says Parks Canada has been monitoring the bridge over the years, and now some repairs are needed.
Hamilton says that larger project will be replacing the fixed portion of the bridge, and the jury is still out on if the swing bridge needs repairs or replacing.
The Hamlet Bridge is in between Severn and Gravenhurst. It will be closed between 9:00am and 3:00pm from July 10th to the 21st while the repairs are being done. Hamilton says the cost for the repairs is minor, as the labour will be done by Parks Canada. He notes the full cost to repair and possibly replace the bridge won’t be known until the design work is done.
