Time is running out to safely surrender unwanted guns

An Ontario-wide gun amnesty campaign is reaching its end. The OPP has been running the month-long campaign so residents can surrender unwanted, or even illegally-owned, firearms, weapons, accessories or ammo.

However, OPP Sergeant Peter Leon notes the amnesty isn’t offered for people who turn in weapons that have been used in a crime.

The amnesty period comes to an end on April 30th, and the OPP says so far it has collected over 250 items, which include restricted, prohibited, replica, and vintage weapons. Over 5,200 pieces of ammunition have also been collected including hollow point bullets. Those weapons and ammo come from 218 gun amnesty calls.

Leon says the gun amnesty program is for the overall safety of the community.

The OPP says the majority of the firearms collected will be destroyed, but some may be kept for historical, educational or training purposes.

If you have a gun and you want to surrender it, call the OPP’s non-emergency number at 1-888-310-1122. Officers will arrange to come and pick up the weapons. You can also use the OPP website to notify the police. The OPP says under no circumstances should you deliver guns or ammo directly to the detachment.
