Huntsville still working to finalize the deal for affordable housing at Sabrina Park Drive

The land has been donated, the proposal has been accepted, but shovels still aren’t in the ground. Huntsville has been in talks with Craig Development throughout the summer in order to start building on Sabrina Park Drive after it donated the land back in March. Town CAO Denise Corry says she is working with the developer to finalize the deal before the actual construction can begin. She notes that the builder was hoping to get the project underway before winter, but there are still planning issues that have to be addressed before work can begin.

The project is expected to be done in three phases; the first two of which will see around 70 homes built. Fifty per cent of those homes will be affordable housing units. Corry says one bedroom apartments are in high demand and the developer has confirmed the design will reflect that. She says they are also willing to commit to a 20-year agreement to ensure the affordable units stay as such.

When Craig Development was chosen to do the work in June, Mayor Scott Aitchison said it was because of its vision. He says the presentation spoke a lot to the concept of a mixed-use development to avoid creating a stigmatized community.
