The Bay and Beyond project in Gravenhurst, aimed at upgrading aging infrastructure, is progressing according to plan.
That’s according to Mark Misko, director of engineering and transportation with the District of Muskoka, who said the week of July 6, crews are completing the setup and testing of a temporary sanitary sewer bypass system to support upcoming sewer replacement work.
He said last week crews worked with utility companies to identify and resolve conflicts with existing underground infrastructure.
The project, which began in May 2024, is currently in the second of three stages.
“So far this season, it’s going well. This is essentially a continuation of the last stages of the Bay and Beyond Project for the last two years,” he said, adding that the installation of the new sanitary sewer will begin at Sarah Street and proceed eastward.
Misko said the project includes the full replacement of underground infrastructure, including water, sewer, and stormwater services. Along with new sidewalks, a multi-use trail connecting toward the wharf, a new road surface, updated granular bedding, and new curb lines.
The project is a multi-year partnership between the District of Muskoka and the Town of Gravenhurst to upgrade aging infrastructure dating back to 1944.
Officials said this essential work will help ensure reliable access to clean drinking water and efficient wastewater services, which we all depend on every day, even if we don’t always see them.
As a result, district officials said Bay Street will remain closed between Sarah Street and Muskoka Road. Motorists are encouraged to use the posted detours.
Additionally, officials said an overnight water service interruption is anticipated in the coming weeks. Affected residents will receive both a 10‑day notice and a 72‑hour notice prior to the scheduled interruption.
Officials said businesses in the construction zone remain open and accessible to customers.
