The District Municipality of Muskoka has launched a new initiative aimed at making housing easier and more affordable to build in the region.
The initiative, led by District Chair Jeff Lehman, will engage the housing industry and showcase its work through the Spotlight on Housing Series.
“Creating more rental housing, faster, means finding new ways to partner and making the most of our resources,” said Lehman. “We’re listening to the people who build housing, and this series is all about showing what’s possible when local action is focused on real solutions that work.”
Officials said the first approach to housing focuses on rental solutions, such as proposed head lease arrangements. Under this model, the district would lease units from landlords and sublease them to residents in need of housing. This encourages new construction by partnering with homebuilders to make rental apartments easier to build and more affordable for tenants.
Officials said the Spotlight on Housing Series will also feature new themes each month, including planning reforms, homeownership supports, and infrastructure investments.
A new Request for Information (RFI) is now available, inviting landlords, housing providers, and developers to submit ideas for how head lease arrangements could work in Muskoka.
The deadline to submit the RFI is September 12 at noon.
