The reconstruction of King William Street from Scott Street to Highway 60 in Huntsville is scheduled to start in mid-May.
That is, according to Mark Misko, Director of Engineering and Transportation, who said they are currently conducting the pre-construction meetings with the contractor.
“Their schedule is indicating that they can start work as early as May 19th, which is after the Victoria Day weekend,” he said. “What that means is that you’ll see site activity start ramping up at that point. So, they’ll start mobilizing to the site.”
Misko said the project is part of the District of Muskoka’s investment in essential systems that support housing and will increase capacity to accommodate 3,200 new homes in the Town of Huntsville.
“Building homes starts long before the construction of actual houses. The King William Street reconstruction project is an excellent example of this,” said Jeff Lehman, District of Muskoka Chair. “By replacing the old road surface and underground pipes, we are ensuring the services we need today keep working, while also making intersections safer, improving access for everyone, and preparing the area for future homes and new development.”
District officials said the project includes the replacement of aging sanitary and storm sewers and watermains, a complete re-paving of the road, new curbs, sidewalks, and boulevards, and the installation of new traffic signals.
As a result, parts of King William Street will shift to one-way traffic for reconstruction. However, officials said emergency access, pedestrian crossings at Rogers Cove Drive and the Mall, and access to all local businesses will be maintained throughout the project.
Officials said the project is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
For more information, the district will host an informational session on May 6 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Henrietta’s Pine Bakery, where people can learn about reconstruction updates and ask questions.
