Just before the long weekend, the fire danger rating has been raised to high across the District of Muskoka.
Muskoka Lakes Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Gonneau says the rating has increased due to a lack of moisture and the ground becoming dry.
“That duff layer, which is that top, kind of your leaves from last year and everything – before it actually breaks down and turns into soil, is dry as well,” said Gonneau. “It’s the fine fuel moisture that’s extremely dry right now.”
Officials say residents and visitors are being urged to take the needed precautions to minimize risks of wildfires caused by humans.
Rules to Follow with a High Rating:
- Daytime burning is prohibited, including all contractor fires.
- All current open-air fire permits are suspended, and no new permits will be issued.
- Fireworks are prohibited, and any firework permits are void.
- Evening burning (6 p.m. – 8 a.m.) is still permitted without a permit, but extreme caution must be taken.
Officials say updates will be shared as they become available.
