The 114th annual Bala Regatta will be taking place at the Bala Town Docks on Aug. 2.
A full day of races will begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. There will be 23 swim races in the morning, and 22 canoe and paddle board races in the afternoon, with age categories from as young as six and under to as old as 30 and over.
“We have 6 and under events to make sure they can be involved in the regatta as well,” said incoming commodore Marcia Tupling. “And get them eager to continue over the years.”
Events include six and under boys and girls’ life jacket swims, and adult and child noodle swims, and a flutter board relay.
Tupling said over the years they have made updates to the event to better serve people’s preferences.
A few years back they swapped skiffs for stand-up paddle boards. They have also removed the lunch break, will start all races from the dock, and will hand out awards immediately after each race concludes.
Tupling said the regatta is an opportunity to bring the community together, and for people to try different activities that they may not normally have the chance to do so.
“You don’t have to have experience. It’s lots of fun. There are always people around willing to help and willing to give you some instruction if you need it,” said Tupling. “But really, just people standing on the dock cheering each other on is one of the greatest things.”
Tupling says they hope to see lots of people come out to this year’s regatta.
