As of the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s (SMDHU) latest update, nearly 65,000 have been vaccinated in its medical region, so officials are making sure you know what happens after you get the shot.
SMDHU officials say the majority of side effects happen after you get your second dose. “Most side effects are minor and don’t last very long,” officials say. They list off examples including redness or swelling where the vaccine was administered, tiredness, headaches, muscle or joint pains, chills or a fever, or diarrhea.
“Serious side effects after receiving the vaccine are rare,” officials add. “Most serious reactions will occur shortly after injection, and clinic staff are prepared to help you if you have an allergic reaction should it occur.”
Rare side effects include an allergic reaction like getting hives, facial swelling or trouble breathing, becoming very pale, serious drowsiness, a fever of 40°C or higher, convulsions or seizures and numbness. If you get any of those reactions, officials with the Health Unit say you need to get medical attention right away.
Starting Monday, residents in Muskoka 75 and older are able to book an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine through the province’s booking portal.
