Muskoka Lakes council members walk out over Bala Falls vote

A few councillors were left shocked during a meeting in the Township of Muskoka Lakes.

After Friday’s closed session, council returned back to their open session of the meeting and Mayor Donald Furniss announced he would be bringing a motion to pass a by-law which would agree to lease the lands in Bala to Swift River Energy.

The Town Clerk said they needed six councillors to pass it and four of them got up and walked out. One of those councillors was Sandy Currie and he says it was a spontaneous decision.

He says there was nothing on the agenda that showed anything to do with the Bala Falls or Swift River Energy.

Swift River will be using the land to build a hydroelectric dam at Bala Falls.
