May is Community Living Month, and Community Living Huntsville (CLH) is “shining a light” on their message.
Jennifer Jerrett with the not-for-profit says they hope residents will keep a few things in mind.
“Lead with something positive, have nice things to say, and just be nice,” says Jerrett. “It doesn’t cost you anything to be nice and to be inclusive. That’s really what Community Living Month is all about, being inclusive and just supporting one another.”
Jerrett says they kicked off the month by lighting up both Town Hall and Community Living Huntsville’s office in blue and green, as well as encouraging people to wear those colours and submit selfies.
At 11:00 a.m. on May 6, she says Town Hall will host a flag raising ceremony with speeches, followed by a “get together” at CLH’s building with light refreshments.
Celebrations cap off on May 24 with a “Silent Disco” fundraiser at Huntsville’s Canvas Brewing Company, where participants are given a set of headphones to tune into their choice of dance music.
“There are three different channels that you can listen to, your earphones light up, it tells you what everyone in the room is listening to, and you’re literally dancing with headphones on,” says Jerrett. “It is the [most fun] thing ever.”
The event also launches Canvas’ “Better Together Lager,” which will net CLH a portion of every sale. Jerrett says the winner of the label design contest for those cans is CLH employee Amber Maw, who she says really captured the essence of the community.
“It’s a digital photo of the bandshell and River Mill Park, and you can see in the distance our Town Hall tower,” says Jerrett. “The people in the foreground show diversity in our community. It just shows that everyone is created differently, we all have our things, and we’re all in this together.”
