The Town of Bracebridge is set to demolish the former Post Office located at 98 Manitoba Street.
Officials said the demolition is required because petroleum hydrocarbon compounds were found in the soil and groundwater on the federally owned property, according to a provincial report.
Provincial officials said the demolition will be followed by environmental cleanup of impacted soil and groundwater.
Following the cleanup, officials said the site will be restored with compacted backfill.
According to provincial officials, the project will proceed in three phases, beginning with the demolition of the building. The second phase, focused on site cleanup, is expected to start in spring or summer 2027, followed by the third phase in spring 2029.
As a result, Town officials said single-lane closures will be in effect on Manitoba Street from Nov. 9 to 27, between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., to accommodate demolition work at 98 Manitoba Street.
Town officials said parking will also be restricted in Municipal Parking Lot 3, located behind the building, until early summer 2027. Staff said the laneway from Kimberley Avenue will remain open.
