The Town of Gravenhurst is exploring best practices for regulating e-bikes and e-scooters to help improve safety.
During the July 23 Committee of the Whole meeting, Gravenhurst Mayor Heidi Lorenz said the town would benefit from having regulations in place to better understand where e-bikes and e-scooters are being used, how they are being operated, and where they should be permitted within the municipality.
“There has been some serious consideration coming from the two biggest children’s hospitals about crashes and the uptake on injuries on these,” said Heidi.
Recent reports from the OPP have also highlighted an increase in complaints involving youths riding e-bikes and e-scooters, with some concerns related to unsafe operation.
According to Heidi, e-bikes and e-scooters provide an economical and convenient way for many people to get around. However, she said the growing use of these devices highlights the need for regulations to help prevent potential accidents and address safety concerns.
Councillor Sandy Cairns, who supported the motion, suggested updating signage to better identify pathways designated for e-bikes and e-scooters, while also highlighting alternative routes for users.
“Biking is huge in our town, and I just want to make sure that we have a safe and alternate route for them,” she said.
Following the discussion, staff were directed to review best practices for municipal regulations surrounding e-bikes and e-scooters and provide recommendations for a public outreach program focused on their safe use among riders, pedestrians, and motorists.
