The Bracebridge OPP is reminding the public about e-bike and e-scooter safety rules and regulations following public concerns.
According to police, Bracebridge OPP officers have responded to multiple complaints regarding youths riding e-bikes and e-scooters, particularly in an unsafe manner.
Police said the most recent concern occurred on the morning of July 22 at 4:30 a.m. when youths were causing a disturbance riding e-bikes on Daffodil Ct. in Gravenhurst.
Following the incident, police are reminding the public that e-bikes-also known as power-assisted-bicycles are subject to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act and Ontario Regulation.
The OPP said some requirements for legally operating an e-bike include being at least 16 years old, having operable pedals, an electric motor rated at 500 watts or less, a maximum assisted speed of 32 km/h, and a weight of no more than 120 kg, including the battery.
Additionally, police said some requirements for legally operating an e-scooter include being at least 16 years old, remaining standing while riding, wearing an approved helmet, not carrying passengers or cargo, and not exceeding 24 km/h on a level surface.
The OPP also encourages riders to check local municipal bylaws regarding e-bikes and e-scooters, as some municipalities may have additional restrictions on where they can be used, including certain pathways, trails, and waterfront areas.
