Rehabilitation work is set to begin on Thunder Bridge on Muskoka Road 2 (West Road) in Huntsville.
Town officials say the project, beginning on July 27, will extend the bridge’s lifespan by roughly 25 years while helping maintain a safe and reliable transportation network.
The work will be completed over the 2026 and 2027 construction seasons, to help minimize impacts on the community.
Planned improvements include repairs to the bridge deck and structure, including railings and expansion joints, reconstruction of the sidewalk, a full rebuild of the roadway at both ends of the bridge, resurfacing of Muskoka Road 2 between Hodges Lane and Silver Street, and installation of a new pedestrian crossing with flashing lights at Gouldie Street.
Construction crews will be on site Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with occasional evening work continuing until 7 p.m. Residents may notice increased noise and dust during construction, though officials say efforts will be made to keep disruptions to a minimum.
Motorists can expect minimal impacts during the 2026 construction season, as work will remain below the bridge.
Traffic impacts are expected to increase in 2027, when Muskoka Road 2 will be reduced to a single lane through the construction zone. Officials say additional details about next year’s work will be shared closer to the start of the second phase.
