Downbursts confirmed May 18 in Muskoka

The Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) has wrapped up its investigation into four storms on May 18, including two in Muskoka.

Officials confirmed a downburst in Huntsville at 8:40 p.m. that day, with wind speeds reaching 115 km/h and damage found across an area approximately 2.2 kilometres long and up to 0.3 kilometres wide.

Another downburst was confirmed in Baysville at 8:45 p.m. that same day, with wind speeds reaching 115 km/h and damage found across an area approximately 0.5 kilometres long and up to 0.3 kilometres wide.

Officials said four injuries were reported as a result of the downburst damage in Algonquin Park, while a falling tree claimed one life just south of Huntsville.

According to officials, a ground and drone survey was also completed a few days after the storm, documenting the reported damage along with minor damage to a warehouse building.
