OPP reminding motorists of school crossing guard laws and safety

The OPP is reminding motorists of the laws regarding school crossings and crossing guards.

Under the Highway Traffic Act, school crossing guards are authorized to stop traffic while helping pedestrians cross roadways with speed limits of up to 60 km/h.

Police say when a crossing guard displays a school crossing stop sign before entering the roadway, drivers approaching from either direction are required to stop before reaching the crossing.

The law applies to all vehicles, including those making right or left turns at an intersection. Drivers must remain stopped until all pedestrians, including the crossing guard, have safely cleared the roadway.

Police warn that failing to stop for a crossing guard puts lives at risk and can result in enforcement action.

Motorists are also being reminded to slow down and use caution in school zones, watch for children and pedestrians who may enter the roadway unexpectedly, and eliminate distractions while driving.
