Muskoka EMS is celebrating its paramedics during Paramedic Services Week from May 17 to May 23.
Stuart McKinnon, deputy chief of Muskoka Paramedic Services, said the week is an opportunity to celebrate and highlight the great work paramedics are doing, while also showcasing who they are and their presence in the community, not only in Muskoka but across the province.
“I don’t think there are many jobs in the world that are tougher than being a paramedic. Equally, there aren’t many in the world that are as rewarding as being a paramedic, so we really want to just emphasize the great work they do and celebrate,” he said.
McKinnon said this year’s national theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” highlights the collective responsibility of supporting emergency medical workers and recognizes how paramedics have become an integral part of the healthcare system in local communities.
According to McKinnon, a major highlight of the week will be a virtual “paramedic for a day” event, hosted on their X and Instagram accounts on May 21. During the virtual event, people would be able to follow a Muskoka Paramedic Services crew through an entire shift, starting at 7:00 a.m.
“If you see a paramedic, whether they’re driving by or you see them in the public or in the community, give them a wave, say hi, and engage,” said JC Gilbert, chief of Paramedic Services and Emergency Management. “Ask them how their day is and take an interest in the work that they do and just give them a minute of your time”
Gilbert said to them, it’s a pleasure to serve the community in Muskoka and added he is thankful to work along a “wonderful staff and group of paramedics.”
“Rain or shine, doesn’t matter the time of day. If there’s an emergency, call 911, and we’ll be there,” he said.
