May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month across Canada and the Huntsville OPP is doing their part by highlighting mental health supports available in the community.
Officials said the OPP actively works with individuals experiencing mental health challenges in both Huntsville and Lake of Bays through their Mobile Crisis Response Team (MCRT).
The MCRT is a partnership between a police officer and a trained mental health crisis worker who respond together to calls involving individuals in crisis. Officials said the program is designed to provide a safer, more compassionate response, with crisis workers focusing on de-escalation and support while officers ensure public safety.
The Huntsville OPP is also reminding the public that several local and provincial supports are available for people experiencing mental health challenges or crisis situations.
Available resources include the CMHA Muskoka-Parry Sound Crisis Line, the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, Health811, Kids Help Phone, and Mind-Aid youth support services.
Local counselling and support services available include the CMHA walk-in clinic in Huntsville, the CMHA Muskoka-Parry Sound office, Algonquin Family Health Team, and the Bracebridge walk-in clinic.
