With the risk of human trafficking present in every community, Muskoka residents are invited to attend a free education session focused on awareness and prevention.
The session, entitled Eyes Wide Open, is scheduled for May 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Active Living Centre in Huntsville.
The evening will focus on raising awareness about human trafficking, online luring, and how to recognize warning signs. Organizers say that while trafficking may be less visible in smaller communities, many areas are located along key transportation routes, and online exploitation can occur anywhere.
Featured speaker Timea E. Nagy will share her experience as a survivor of human trafficking. Since 2009, Nagy has educated more than one million people worldwide, contributed to hundreds of police investigations, and supported survivors and their families through advocacy and outreach.
Organizers say the event is designed for both youth and adults, with attendees expected to leave with a better understanding of trafficking indicators, online safety, and available support resources.
“This event is about education and awareness,” organizers said. “By bringing a survivor educator, community organizations, and residents together, we hope to provide people with the knowledge they need to recognize risks and help keep our children, youth and community safe.”
The event is free to attend, but registration is required due to limited seating.
