Safe Quiet Lakes has launched a new educational initiative to raise awareness and promote wake-enhanced boating across the region’s lakes.
Organization officials say the initiative, in partnership with Safe Wakes Coalition, aims to help protect shorelines, reduce environmental impacts, and improve safety for all lake users, while promoting the long-term sustainability of wake-enhanced activities.
“This is about helping people enjoy wake-enhanced activities in a way that works for everyone on the lake,” said Colleen Kennedy, Chair of the Safe Wakes Coalition. “Distance, depth, and space all matter, and when they’re respected, everyone benefits.”
According to officials, wakes generated too close to shore or in shallow water can contribute to shoreline erosion, sediment disruption, and increased safety risks, particularly for swimmers, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards.
As a result, officials said the campaign encourages wake-enhanced boat operators to remain at least 250 metres away from shorelines, docks, and boathouses, operate in water at least nine metres deep, and maintain enough space for a safe and uninterrupted ride.
Additionally, officials said the organization launched lake-specific maps to help boaters identify areas where wake-enhanced activities can be carried out safely and responsibly.
The organization said the campaign will roll out with education materials, marina partnerships, digital outreach, and community engagement throughout the boating season.
