South Muskoka Hospital Foundation opens applications for 2026 Educational Assistance Awards

The South Muskoka Hospital Foundation (SMHF) is now accepting applications for the 2026 Educational Assistance Awards to help those pursuing a career in health care.

“We’re proud to support our healthcare teams in advancing their education and careers at the hospital. It shows our gratitude and belief in all that they do to care for the community,” said Leah Walker, SMHF Executive Director. “We hope graduating students are encouraged to return to South Muskoka Hospital knowing their Foundation and community supports them.”

According to foundation officials, the awards were established to assist graduating secondary students who reside in communities served by the hospital and are pursuing post-secondary education in Health Sciences.

The foundation offers two student awards: the Volunteerism Award and the Academic Achievement Award.

Award quantities and amounts are reviewed annually by the SMHF Board and Awards Committee, and typically range between $500 and $2,000.

Maiya Dyni, a 2025 Educational Assistance Award recipient and Medical Sciences student, said the award “lightened” her financial load, allowing her to focus more on her studies and take part in extra-curricular opportunities.

“I’ve always dreamed of becoming a doctor, and this grant is helping turn that dream into a reality,” she said, adding she hopes to return to South Muskoka one day to both live and work as a physician.

Since 2023, the SMHF has awarded funding to four hospital staff and four students, reducing financial barriers and fostering career growth that strengthens local patient care.

The deadline to apply is May 1 at 4:00 p.m. For more information, click here.
